Sedation dentistry is a way of receiving dental care that can greatly reduce your stress and anxiety, especially if you suffer from a fear of the dentist. Being sedated allows you to relax while you are in the dental chair, so your visit goes quickly and you can have your teeth tended to stress-free.
How Sedation Dentistry Works
Sedation dentistry uses mild forms of sedation to help you achieve a very relaxed state. It does not involve general anesthesia, in which you are unconscious. With sedation, you will be aware of everything around you and able to answer questions and respond to directions provided by your dentist.[pullquote] Being sedated allows you to relax while you are in the dental chair, so your visit goes quickly and you can have your teeth tended to stress-free.[/pullquote]
Typically, you will be provided with a mild sedative in pill form, or with nitrous oxide that is administered during your time in the dental chair. A sedative pill will take some time to take effect as well as some time to wear off, so you should arrange to have someone drive you to your appointment and back home after your work is complete. With nitrous oxide, you will probably be able to drive yourself home, as this sedative clears out of your system fairly quickly. However, if you feel at all uncomfortable with the idea of driving after your appointment, it is best to err on the side of caution and arrange a ride.
Advantages of Sedation Dentistry
Being sedated during your dental work has several advantages. People who experience dental anxiety often put off dental visits, so there is a good chance there are several things that need to be tended to. This could include cleaning, deep cleaning, providing restorations for cavities, or other work. With sedation, your dentist will be able to complete several of these procedures at the same time, allowing you to catch up with any neglected dental care.
Sedation creates an intensely relaxed, almost dreamlike state, during which time seems to move more quickly. You will be very comfortable and stress-free, making your dental visit a relaxing, even pleasant experience.
