Toothaches are one of the most common problems in dentistry. They can result from numerous causes. Some toothaches are easily treated, while others indicate serious conditions that require complex treatment. You should be aware of the various causes of toothache so you’ll know when it is best to visit your dentist for immediate treatment.

Causes of Toothache

Toothaches are not uncommon, and can occur due to various issues with the teeth. Sometimes they are minor and go away on their own. In other cases, they are very uncomfortable and persist over a long period of time. Some of the most common causes of toothache include:

  • Damage to the tooth
  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Infection around or beneath the tooth
  • Problems with the tooth nerve

If you have experienced facial trauma followed by toothache, you might have damaged the tooth. Visit your dentist to have any damage diagnosed. Tooth decay normally does not result in toothache unless it has become severe. This is why it’s important to visit the dental office regularly. X-rays and dental exams often catch decay in very early stages, before it has progressed enough to cause discomfort. The same is true of gum disease or infection.

Symptoms of Tooth Damage

Toothache can be accompanied by other symptoms that can indicate the cause of the discomfort or other issues that might be related to it. Extreme sensitivity due to gum disease or nerve issues can lead to toothache. Toothache can also be accompanied by headaches or discomfort in the jaw. In some cases, the headache is the main symptom, and the actual toothache is more difficult to discern.

Sensitivity to cold is a common issue in dentistry, and does not necessarily mean you have a severe problem with your teeth. It can lead to toothache, but is often easily treated with special toothpastes. Sensitivity to heat, however, can indicate a problem with the tooth nerve, and should be treated as soon as possible.
